Satyanarayan Pooja at Home

Satyanarayan Pooja is a Hindu ritual performed to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. Satyanarayan Pooja Samgrahi (Materials Required)

  • Puja thali
  • Kalash (pot)
  • Coconut
  • Flowers
  • Incense sticks
  • Camphor
  • Betel leaves and nuts
  • Fruits
  • Prasad (sweet dish)
  • Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee)
  • Turmeric powder
  • Kumkum (vermilion)
  • Sandalwood paste
  • Haldi (turmeric) and kumkum
  • Aarti (lamp) with wicks and oil
  • A small piece of new cloth
  • Holy water
  • Rice
  • Red cloth
  • A conch shell

Satyanarayan Pooja Preparation

Before starting the pooja, one must prepare the altar. First, clean the area where the pooja will be performed. Spread a clean cloth on the altar and place the picture or idol of Lord Satyanarayan on it. Decorate the altar with flowers, incense sticks, and aarti.

The Kalash

The next step is to prepare the kalash. Fill the kalash with water and add some rice, betel leaves, and nuts to it. Place a coconut on the kalash and tie a red cloth around it. Use haldi and kumkum to draw a swastika on the coconut.

Satyanarayan Pooja Steps/Process

Once the preparations are done, it’s time to start the pooja. Begin by inviting Lord Satyanarayan to the altar. Light the lamp and offer flowers, fruits, and prasad to Lord Satyanarayan. Offer panchamrit to the deity and then sprinkle holy water on yourself and the other members of the family.

Reciting the Satyanarayan Katha

The Satyanarayan Katha is an important part of the pooja. It is a story of Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as Lord Satyanarayan and is recited during the pooja. The person performing the pooja should recite the katha while the others listen attentively.

Offering Aarti

Once the katha is over, offer aarti to Lord Satyanarayan. Light the camphor and wave it in front of the deity. Ring the bell and offer flowers to the deity.
